DISCOVERY HARBOUR

We went on an adventure to Discovery Harbour located in Penetanguishene, Ontario. Visitors are taken back in time to a small settlement that was started just after the War of 1812. The area along Penetanguishene Bay was scouted out by Sir John Graves Simcoe as a strategic place for a naval base. Replicas of the buildings surround the area. You can take a audio tour or venture on your own. Some of the buildings had people, dressed in period clothing, to greet you. They would supply the visitor with the purpose of the specific building and the people that would reside in them. Some of the buildings provided an interactive experience such as playing a game of toss that the sailors would play to pass the time. Instruments, equipment and furnishings of the period are available for people to see. A small theatre provides a short but informative history about how this place came to be and what live was like for those who resided here so long ago. A must see is the two ships that are dock here that are replicas of ships that would have been docked there- the supply schooner H.M.S Bee and the warship H.M.S Tecumseth. All are welcomed aboard these ships. One is also invited to go down below to view what the quarters were really like for those who would sail in these types of ships. An interesting exhibit to see in the skeleton of the actual HMS Tecumseth that was sunk in the bay so many years ago. This is a great place for anyone who is a Canadian history enthusiast. Especially those who interested in military or naval life of the past. There are activities for every member of your family!
